MRS. PATTY BALMER, PRINCIPALMRS. PATTY BALMER, PRINCIPAL

Mrs. Balmer’s experience is extensive with over 32 years in education, including 12 as an administrator, where her calm and steady manner is well known and admired.   She has been principal at SMSA since 2017, describing her position as her “dream job.”  She taught at St. Theresa School in Buffalo, in the North Colonie School District in Colonie, the Niskayuna School District, and at Hebrew Academy of the Capital District where she also served as the principal. Mrs. Balmer has held positions in other Albany Diocesan schools including principal of St. Augustines, interim principal at St. Mary’s Institute and as Prevention Services Coordinator for the Diocese.  She holds a BS in Elementary Education from Medaille College, MS in Literacy and Advanced Graduate Certificate both from SUNY Albany, she has permanent certifications in Elementary Education N-6, Literacy K-12 and School Building Leadership N-12..

MRS. BEVERLY KERPKAMRS. BEVERLY KERPKA, DIRECTOR OF NOAH'S ARK PRE-K/DAYCARE

In 1994 Mrs. Kerpka started the program; serving children ages 3-5, and served as a warm and loving teacher, full time, for 23 years while building the program. In 2017 she assumed her supervisory role full time. She received AAS Certification in Early Childhood Education (Birth- Pre-K) from SUNY Canton, and worked as a preschool teacher in Lockport New York before becoming part of our school family. Let her welcome you to one of the most nurturing and enriching programs our area has to offer!

BONNIE SMITHMRS. BONNIE SMITH, NOAH'S ARK TEACHER (3 YEAR OLD PROGRAM)

Mrs. Smith joined SMSA in 2014 and brings her love of children and passion for excellence into all she does in the classroom.  Mrs. Smith has been in education for 21 years, graduated from Hunter College with a BS in Medical Computer Science and has certification in Early Childhood Development.  Prior to being at SMSA, Mrs. Smith worked in a nursery school in Westchester, NY.

MRS. JESSICA VIGERMRS. JESSICA VIGER, NOAH’S ARK TEACHER, 3-4 YEAR OLD PROGRAM

Mrs. Viger comes to us with over 20 years of experience as a Preschool teacher.  She is a mother of two daughters ages 4 and 15, and has a love for adding music to all activities. Mrs. Viger is currently enrolled to finish her Children’s Development Assessment certificate, and is taking classes to finish her teaching degree.

KATHLEEN FORTIERKATHLEEN FORTIER, NOAH'S ARK TEACHER, 4 YEAR OLD PROGRAM

Mrs. Fortier brings a lifetime of teaching experience to her Noah’s Ark four year olds.  She has been in education for 24 years and at SMSA since 2014.  Her students thrive under her calm and confident care.   Mrs. Fortier has a BS in Psychology from St. Michael’s College and an MST degree from SUNY Plattsburgh.

JESSICA TRZASKOSMRS. JESSICA TRZASKOS, NOAH'S ARK TEACHER, 4 YEAR OLD PROGRAM

Mrs. Trzaskos has seventeen years of teaching experience, joining the SMSA teaching staff in 2018.  She has a BS in Elementary Education from Fulton Montgomery Community College and the College of St. Rose, as well as a Master of Library Science degree from SUNY Albany.  She is on the go with her four year old class, embracing each student’s unique gifts into her sunny classroom.

AMANDA PHILLIPSMRS. AMANDA PHILLIPS, NOAH'S ARK TEACHER (4 YEAR OLDS)

Miss Phillips was welcomed into the “Ark”  in 2018. She has a BA in Early Childhood Education and a Masters of Science  in Educational Technology (Specialist)from SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Oneonta, as well as certifications in Early Childhood Education (Birth-6).   Miss Phillips’ four year olds are big huggers in this happy classroom at SMSA. Miss Phillips also taught at Washington County Head Start before teaching at SMSA.

TANYA HARTMANMRS.TANYA HARTMAN, NOAH’S ARK TEACHER (4 YEAR OLDS)

Mrs. Hartman was born and raised in Bristol, VT and currently lives in Queensbury, NY with her husband and two children.  She has worked with children for about seventeen years in various capacities, including as a NYS registered Daycare Owner/Operator.  She has an AA in Early Childhood Education (SUNY Empire), BA in Educational Studies (Suny Plattsburgh)  and is working to complete her Master’s in Childhood Education.  Mrs. Hartman has a  strong passion for teaching children and a love for learning.  Welcome to SMSA!

BROOKE KELLYMRS. BROOKE KELLY, KINDERGARTEN

 Mrs. Kelly graduated from The College of Saint Rose with a BS in Early Childhood Education. She is currently working on her Masters Degree at The University of Albany, in Literacy Specialty. Mrs. Kelly has worked at St. Mary’s for many years in Noah’s Ark. She has been with us since 2008.

LINDSEY FREDETTEMRS. LINDSEY FREDETTE, 1ST GRADE TEACHER

Mrs. Fredette graduated from St. John Fisher College with a BS in Elementary and Special Education and has her Masters in Literacy from The College of St. Rose. She holds professional certifications in Elementary Education, Special Education for Grades 1-6 and in Literacy Birth-6. Her warmth and professionalism are evident in all she does.   Mrs. Fredette has been with us since 2012.

ANNE CASOLAMISS ANNE CASOLA, 2ND GRADE TEACHER

Miss Casola has taught for ten years, and at SMSA since 2012.  A graduate of Siena College with a BBA in Accounting, as well as the College of St. Joseph where she received her Masters in Elementary and Literacy Certification (Birth-6), her background includes three years of teaching in public schools in the area before joining SMSA in 2012 to teach 2nd grade. She is also the driver behind our newly created Summer Enrichment Program which launched this summer.  Miss Casola is also a Certified Teacher  Birth-Grade 2 and Grades 1-6.  Look for high expectations (and a patient teacher) in Miss Casola’s 2nd grade class.

NOREEN HARRISMRS. NOREEN HARRIS, 3RD GRADE TEACHER

A native of New York City, Mrs. Harris has been in education for 43 years.  She taught in the South Bronx Public and Catholic Schools, and has been at SMSA for the past 33 years as our 3rd, 5th, and 6th Grade teacher.  Her bar is high, but count on Mrs. Harris to add fun and new adventures to each new year. She holds a BS in Education and Spanish from Iona College and an MS in Early Childhood Education from the College of New Rochelle.  In addition to her busy days teaching 3rd grade, she is also the Director of Camp Kerry, SMSA’s after-school program.

MARCELLA CARBONEMRS. MARCELLA CARBONE, 4TH GRADE TEACHER

Mrs. Carbone graduated from SUNY Cortland with a BS in Childhood Education and is certified Birth-6.  She also holds an MS in Literacy and Special Education, Birth-6.  Previous teaching jobs over her 14 year teaching career were at Goshen Intermediate and Warwick Valley Middle Schools, Kings Elementary, Farnsworth Middle School, the Waldorf of Saratoga and at Joseph Henry Elementary School in Galway.  Mrs. Carbone joined the SMSA school family in 2015 where SMSA fourth graders have benefitted from not only her extensive experience but her quiet determination to bring out the very best in every student.

MICHELE MERGENMRS. MICHELE MERGEN, STREAM INSTRUCTOR AND 5TH GRADE TEACHER

Mrs. Mergen has been teaching for 13 years, including the Armed Services YMCA, Navy College Whidbey Island, WA and at Chimney Lakes Elementary in Jacksonville, FL.  She “loves the job” since coming on board in 2018 as our STREAM instructor for all students Pre-K through 8th Grade. Starting in 2019-20 she is also the 5th Grade homeroom and science teacher.  Mrs. Mergen holds a BS in Child & Family Studies and Sociology from SUNY Oneonta, and an MS in Human Resources from Chapman University, with NYS Childhood Education Certificate and Florida Professional Certifications K-6 & Math 5-9. Our students are crazy about STREAM, thanks to Mrs. M.

MARIANNE SMITHMRS. MARIANNE SMITH, GRADES 3-5 RELIGION

A native of Long Island, Mrs. Smith holds permanent certification in Elementary Education with a BA in Child Study from St. Joseph’s College, and an MA in Liberal Arts from Stonybrook University.  She taught at Infant Jesus Catholic School in Port Jefferson, and at Our Lady of the Annunciation in Queensbury. Always ready to share an aspect of the faith to students and colleagues, Mrs. Smith ably serves our students in Grades 3-6 as their religion teacher.  She has been at SMSA for 16 years.

MEGAN HUNTMRS. MEGAN HUNT, MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES AND RELIGION

Mrs. Hunt wears two hats at SMSA’s Middle School, teaching Middle School Social Studies (since 2011), and, more recently (since 2016) Middle School Religion., She also coaches our girls basketball team.  Mrs. Hunt embodies the Kerry Spirit in all she does in the classroom and on the playing field.  She has a degree in English, Secondary Education and Communication, and has been teaching for over 19 years.

ANNETTE GERMANMISS ANNETTE GERMAN,  MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

A veteran teacher, Miss German grew up in Buffalo.  She has held previous teaching positions in Portsmouth VA and New Orleans.   A graduate of SUNY Buffalo, Miss German has a BS in Education, a BA in History and her Master’s degree in creativity.  SMSA welcomes our newest addition to our outstanding faculty!

MARA POWELLMRS. MARA POWELL, MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH

Mrs. Powell is a graduate of Boston University with a BS in Aerospace Engineering.  She also has a Masters in Materials Engineering from RPI.  An active SMSA parent for the past twelve years, she added “teacher” to her resume in 2016.  With a special gift for making difficult concepts understandable, Mrs. Powell is in the right seat on the bus as SMSA’s math teacher.

MATTHEW FLINTMR. MATTHEW FLINT, MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE

Mr. Flint has taught for over five years, and has been a member of the SMSA faculty since 2017.  A believer in hands-on instruction from the classroom trout tank to water experiments to test for erosion and so much more, he instills in our Middle School students a love for the physical world and all things created. He has a BS in Biology from Marist College with certifications in Biology and General Science.

LAUREN OGDENMISS LAUREN OGDEN, K-8 FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Miss Ogden, SMSA Class of 2005, has taught French and Spanish at SMSA since 2015 to students at all levels.  She received her BA in Foreign Language and Theatre Arts at Sarah Lawrence College in 2013, and worked for a year as a language assistant at the Lycee des Heberges, France. She teaches theatre during the summer at Saratoga Arts, and offers private language tutoring after school for Elementary and Noah’s Ark students. Her French/Spanish celebrations are a much anticipated part of life at SMSA, and parents love that not only do all students at SMSA take language, but that her older elementary students are sufficiently confident in their budding language skills to read and play games in another language with our youngest children in Noah’s Ark.

PEG CLOHESSYMRS. PEG CLOHESSY, ART

Mrs. Clohessy brings out the creative spirit in every student, and surprises us constantly with exceptional work that graces our historic halls and walls. She is a former SMSA parent, 1st grade teacher’s aide, and Camp Kerry Director, and has taught art at SMSA (all levels)  for over 25 years. The annual art showcase of student talent is one of our most celebrated events at SMSA.  Mrs. Clohessy has a BS in Art from Skidmore College with extension classes from NYU.

ERIN DOVEMISS ERIN DOVE, MUSIC/DRAMA

Whether it’s singing, acting or dancing,  Miss Dove has the special talent of not only being able to do it all but to teach it, too!  Miss Dove has a bachelor's degree in Performing Arts and Music from SUNY Fredonia and received additional training in Theatre Arts as well as her teacher training from Middlesex University, London, in 2010.  She has been our music/drama teacher since 2012.  Miss Dove is the driving force behind our hugely successful annual musicals held at the Wood Theater, our annual Middle School musical in the spring, and SMSA’s school choir that sings at weekly Holy Mass.  An active member of the local arts community, she teaches private voice, piano, and violin lessons, heads a summer program for Theater Arts at the Wood Theater, and assists our students with preparation for the annual NYSSMA competitions.

JOHN BARBIERIMR. JOHN BARBIERI, PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Mr. Barbieri’s has a quiet and commanding presence that our children love and their rapt attention  as they learn healthy habits through exercise, sport, and the importance of good sportsmanship during team play.  He coaches our Middle School soccer team, boys basketball and summer track team. Mr. Barbieri has taught P.E. at SMSA since 2001. He has a BS in Physical Education from Ithaca/Castleton State and NYS Physical Education Certification.

MARIANNE FACKLAMMRS. MARIANNE FACKLAM, MUSIC/BAND

Mrs. Facklam’s  extensive teaching experience spans over four decades, and students from Greece Central School, South Glens Falls and Rawlings Middle Schools of the Arts have benefitted from her command of her subject and her wonderful ability to bring out the best in her student musicians.  SMSA is proud to call her our own since 2014 where she directs and teaches the Middle School Band and Intermediate Band.  Mrs. Facklan has a BS and MS in Music Education from Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, respectively, with NYS Permanent Certification in Music K-12.

MARY GREGORIOMRS. MARY GREGORIO, DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND AIS READING

Mrs. Gregorio has a BS in Psychology and an MA in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from Herbert H. Lehman, with Elementary Education Permanent Certification in Early Childhood/Elementary Education. She has 35 years of teaching experience, first teaching in Philadelphia and New York City schools before becoming SMSA’s 2nd grade teacher 27 years ago. Since 2015, she has been the Director of Religious Education, and, since 2018,  serves as our AIS Reading Instructor. Mary has a particular heart for service, one that manifests itself not only in the classroom, but as organizer of our many school wide service projects.

MARY K. ILOWIECKIMRS. MARY K. ILOWIECKI, DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS AND LIBRARIAN

Mrs. Ilowiecki served as a volunteer for many years when her children attended SMSA. She is a   PTSA Past President and former School Board Member.  Since 2002,  Mrs. Ilowiecki has been  the Admissions Director. In 2018, she also became our school librarian.   A graduate of St. Louis University in 1981 (BS in Physical Therapy), she was awarded the The Mother Francis Cabrini Distinguished School Support Award from the Diocese of Albany in 2019.  Mrs. Ilowiecki loves her work  at SMSA that permits her to engage in two of her favorite things:  her love of reading, and spreading the good word about the value of Catholic education..

BERNADETTE LEONEMRS. BERNADETTE LEONE, ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL

Mrs. Leone a native of Long Island and worked in the financial and insurance industries for 22 years before joining the SMSA family.  She volunteered at the school while her daughter recuperated from a broken leg in kindergarten then joined the staff as the Assistant to the Principal in 2003.  She has served in this role for 16 years enjoying her time spent working with parents, students and SMSA faculty & staff members.

DEANA WHITEMRS. DEANA WHITE, BOOKKEEPER

Mrs. White  has been with SMSA for 13 years, overseeing all things financial.  Her previous work experience includes management of finances at the Saratoga Raceway, and at various private corporations as an accountant over the past 20 years.   She serves as our Fundraising Chair, and is always available to help connect parents with the various service opportunities available at SMSA.  She’s the one to call if you have a question about your bill, or if you need help navigating our financial aid process.

DAVE MATTESMR. DAVE MATTES, HEAD CUSTODIAN

A building our size might daunt some, but Mr. Mattes is right there, always helpful,  overseeing  the maintenance of our historical building.   After he retired in 2007 as a corrections officer, Mr. Mattes worked as head custodian at St. Mary’s Church for six years before coming on board in the same capacity at SMSA in 2015. It’s true you can’t do without an exceptional custodian.  We’ve got that in Mr. Mattes!


JENNIFER ORTIZMRS. JENNIFER ORTIZ, SCHOOL NURSE

SMSA students  are in the best of hands with caring, competent Mrs. Ortiz.  She has seven years experience as a nurse, joining our school family in 2018. She holds an AAS in Nursing from SUNY Adirondack, with certifications in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Mrs. Ortiz previously worked at Glens Falls Hospital.  Everyone loves that she is here and at the ready should we need her!
